Songbird and voice of Roxette, Marie Fredriksson has passed away at the age of 61. The swedish pop star had been fighting a lengthy battle with brain cancer since being diagnosed on 13 September, 2002, after a fall at her home. Best known as the big voice of swedish pop act Roxette, Fredriksson finally succumbed to the disease on the Monday morning.
"It is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our biggest and most beloved artists is gone. Marie Fredriksson passed away on the morning of December 9 as a result of her previous illness." Marie Dimberg, Marie's former agent.
Known for her powerful, emotive vocals and punky blonde hair in the ’90’s Fredriksson was forced to slow down when doctors advised that Roxette cancel their remaining tours in 2016. Little did her fans know that the February 8th concert in Cape Town, South Africa, would be her last live performance.
The bands final album released on June 3, 2016.
Marie’s friend and long-time bandmate Per Gessle shared his condolences on his Twitter account yesterday afternoon.
Time goes by so quickly. It’s not that long ago we spent days+nights in my tiny apartment sharing impossible dreams. And what a dream we eventually got to share! I’m honoured to have met your talent+generosity. All my love goes to you+your family. Things will never be the same.
Marie Fredriksson will always be remembered for her impact on pop music through Roxette, and her courageous battle against Cancer. We salute her, and remember her.
